How Can Mobility Issues Emotionally Impact the Elderly?

How Can Mobility Issues Emotionally Impact the Elderly?

Social isolation, depression and limited mobility seem to go hand-in-hand for the elderly. Research has suggested that the elderly are more likely to have an intense emotional reaction to the loss of mobility as they age. Our elderly may exhibit some, if not all, of the following symptoms when they begin to lose the ability to independently function:

  • Hostility and resentment
  • Embarrassment and guilt
  • Social isolation
  • Reduction in physical activity
  • Physical fatigue and weakness
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Poorer overall health

However, those who use mobility scooters, power chairs and other devices that assist with mobility issues are better able to engage with life-enhancing activity and may regain their desire for participation in socialising!

What can cause loss of mobility?

A study on potential mobility limitations in older adults continued to cite the following as the most common factors for a loss in mobility:

  • Low physical activity
  • Balance or strength impairment
  • Obesity
  • Forms of chronic disease such as arthritis and diabetes

Exercise is a fantastic way to begin combating many of these factors, and is critical for preventative care measures. The four main areas to focus on for maintaining mobility as we age are:

  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Flexibility
  • Endurance

Depending on the health status of a particular person, physical activity can be achieved in a number of different ways. These can include regular walks, exercise classes or team sports and games. At Days Mobility, we have a vast range of information on how you can tackle the loss of mobility, as well as a range of products to help you with this very thing.
